Volume 1

Meet Genie, Merrill, and Melissa. They're a group of adventurers who let nothing stand in their way...unless it's a magical barrier. They decide that what they need is a wizard. But unfortunately for them, all the local wizards in the area are too caught up in their spell books to go trasure hunting. That is, all of them except the wizard-in-training Loiue. They brush him off so he decides to pick a fight with Genie but ends up accidently blowing up the tavern. Louie decides that he deserves a second chance and tries to track down Melissa. Things only get worse when Louie manages to crash to the inner sactum os the local temple as Melissa is told by the god that the one she is to be ordained to follow will be the next person she meets. Enter LOUIE! Oh great, so this means that block head is supposed to be the champion she is to follow? "THIS IS AGAINST MY WILL!"

After being scolded by Merrill and Genie, and having no other wizards available, Melissa accepts him into the group. The party head off to the ruins with Louie finding himself doing more manual laobr than magic spells. Despite their misgivings, Louie actually manages to open the magically sealed door to the ruins. But, while inside it becomes apparent that the place had LONG been looted of any treasure. Then it becomes apparent that it's also inhabited by orcs. Louie decides to use his magic staff...as a club and breaks it, rendering him worthless. So they decide this is Louie's LAST adventure with them.

Now Louie must enter an evil forest to find a 500 year old oak tree to have a new magic staff carved...and the girls could care less. But when Louie is corted by a rival group of adventurers, Louie suspect that they have underlying motives. It turns out that his step-father is the head of the magic guild.

Finally the girls reluctantly decide to help poor Louie on his quest for ancient wood. Louie is given several items by Ila, a fellow classmate and friend, including a demon calling whistle...which Loiue promptly blows upon entering the forest. Great, a battle. But Louie finds himself fighting a wild boar with his bare fists. After winning the battle, the party comes upon a grove of ancient trees, and is distracted by an elf. After being caught the elf, Celecia, tells them the trees are grave markers and she will lead them to her village to obtain the wood Louie needs...which is OBVIOUSLY a trap, but Louie leads the team right into it. To escape Louie deivses a plan SO CRAZY it just might work...he uses the whistle again, calling a horde of demons to the village. But Louie doesn't use the comotion to make an escape, rather he weilds his now rotting boar to help defeat the demons he had summoned. Louie obtains the wood he needs as a result of his deeds, because the elves have no idea HE'S THE ONE WHO CALLED THE DEMONS!

Volume 2

We find Melissa has been given the task to lead a group of junior priestesses to a ruin for some practical training. The usual party tags along. But Melissa just can't bring herself to reveal to her suboridinates that the idiot Louie is her champion. Soon after entering the ruins Louie and Melissa fall though the floor and are seperated from the group. Compound that with an endless horde of zombies, can Louie cut a path back to the others...he doesn't get the chance when the others catch up.

Episode 6 spells double trouble for Melissa when a man shows up procliming his undying love. She quickly decides to make a deal with her Fiance, Conrad, that if he can best Louie that she will go home with him and if not he has to never speak to her again. She thinks she has it in the bag, since he's an even worse swordsman than Louie has turned out to be. But her plans come crashing down as Merrill discovers that Conrad is a master swordsman. Ila seems to have other thoughs about Conrad's skills and disappears. As the day comes for the fight, it's obvious Louie has no chance to win...or does he? Ila returns with a sword for Louie to use and she instructs him to say a special phrase. The sword leaps out of Louie's hands and begins attacking Conrad. Then Conrad's own sword leaps out of his hand and beings fighting Louie's. It turns out that the swords are "Dancing Swords" and will fight each other as a dance. Meanwhile Luoie prepares to give Conrad a fist sandwich, to which Conrad replies "NOT IN THE FACE!" So Louie hurls Conrad causing him to come out of his armor, revealing Conrad is not the buff & macho knight he claims to be, but instead he's a scrawny little man with a pretty face.

Merrill makes out like a theif (which she is) by betting heavily on the fight on not only Louie's victory, but also which of his body parts would be injured. But after a fire burns down the hotel she's staying in, she becomes paranoid about her "Precious Jar" of money and turns her back on everybody including her friends. Louie catches up with her and convinces her to bury the cash for save keeping. He also summons a clay golem to protect the money, but Merrill gives the order "Don't let anyone near my Precious Jar!" which the to dumb golem includes her. Then while she's arguing with Louie, the golem mistakes something Louie says about a "DUMB THING" as an order to throw the jar into a near-by BOTTOMLESS "HOT SPRING". Unfortunately for Merrill, in the end the jar of money is lost forever.

A festival is approaching, but Louie is grounded until he can complete his homework and a special project a professor gives him. Louie pulls all-nighter after all-nighter and just barely manages to make it to the festival. At the festival, Melissa's three fans plot to embarrass Louie but end up only embarrasing Genie and Merrill. Louie takes Ila to a special attraction complete with a mechanical dragon, which of course goes brezerk. Louie manages to defeat the dragon and a good part of the citadel. Melissa finally reveals to all that Louie is her champion...and the professor reveals it was the special part Louie constucted that caused the problem in the first place. Oh well.

Volume 3

It's now the middle of summer and Louie takes a side job as a porter (something he's accustomed to) to which Ila takes full advantage of by hiring him as a delivery boy for her father's shop. Hot and humid weather suddenly becomes cold and snow when Louie asks for it to cool down some. They return to the magic guild to find a letter from an old teacher of Ila's waiting for her. She learns that Master Bernard has completed an ancient magical machine capable of controlling the weather. So she gathers up the group and they head off to investigate. They are joined by Celecia along the way as she's been ordered to help the humans as punishment for allowing them to enter the village and also harming the sacred trees.

Arriving at Bernard's tower, they find he doesn't like visitors and find them self confronted by a flesh golem. When the golem asks for a password, Louie ask the golem to repeat the question. WRONG ANSWER. Now they have to fight the golem...but in the end it is defeated. They arrive at the room where the machine is kept and find that Master Bernard has been frozen solid by mad ice spirits. Then the golem returns and is frozen also. Unfortnately, he crashes into Bernard and they both shatter. Louie devises a plan to stop the machine. While the others create a diversion by calling a fire spirit, Louie makes a last gamble on how to stop the machine...he hasn't studied his "Four Greatest Magics" and the colors that represent them. Ge gets lucky and turns off the machine, and the expanded team parts once again.

On to the next adventure! The team sets off to rescue an old crystal miner who is though to be lost. Soon they find that they have company when Melissa's rival Isabel shows up with her own adventuring party, which includes a hunky guy who is everything Louie is not. A race ensues when the teams realize they after the same guy. Finally reaching their destination and out of breath, the two teams join together to find the miner. When they do, they discover he's not alone. There are also giant slugs there, which rough and tough Genie is afraid of. They also find that the miner's mine is crumbling as he tries to excavate a giant crystal. Louie orders everybody out while he alone digs out the crystal as fast as he can, but Melissa decides to stay and help. The cave collapses and everyone thinks Louie and Melissa are gone forever, but with Louie's blind luck both are save with crystal in tow...which promtly shatters into tiny fragments.

Louie's step-father is away on business and that gives the professor Foltess great pleasure. Instantly he calls an assembly and give the longest and dullest speack in the magic guild's history. Disgusted, Ila and Louie ditch classes and meet up with Genie, Melissa, and Merrill at a pub. Then a small girl shows up with her piggy bank wanting to hire them for a mission. She wants them to find a special flower that only blooms on moonlight for her sick grandmother. But it's a rare flower not native to the region, but all is not lost and Louie discovers the guild has one. Well yes all is lost as Master Foltess (or "You old snake" as Louie calls him) refuses to give up even one petal for Louie's quest. But of course this won't stop Louie. He sets a trap of snakes for Foltess as a distraction so that he can steal the keys to the greenhouse where the flower is kept. The party ultimately finds the flower and much to Foltess's confusion it's still there the next day. the little girl thought the flower was so pretty she left it there and drew a picture instead...which of course still delights her grandmother. Ila also reveals that one of the snakes is missing...poor Foltess.

What they find is that Isabel's group is ALSO investigating. Jakinson of Isabel's team recounts the history of the mansion. They find no treasure but something far more sinister, a lab used to create magical monsters. Louie explains that the magic used is supposed to be ancient and a lost art. Disgusted by what he sees, Louie decides to destory the lab. But who did it belong to? Later that night there's a party and the price of the kingdom is there in his father's stead...but isn't that ISABEL'S CHAMPION?! Also, we find that one of the members of Isabel's team is in leagues with the owner of the monster lab AND who ordered the lab's constuction. It turns out that the King's advisor (or something) ordered the lab's construction and that Master Foltess was the one running it.

What the hell is going on? You'll have to find out when Volumes 5 & 6 are released.

Released as Rune Soldier by ADV.

Okay, there are three words you need to know about this series. "J.C. STAFF" Yes, those maniacs behind Excel Saga and Puni Puni Poemi are the production team behind Louie the Rune Soldier. Though the director this time is NOT Shinich Wantanabe (aka Nabeshin), he does make an appearance as one of the one of the thugs Louie meets in episode 3. But the character is Nabeshin only in appearance.

The series is not the goofy mess that Excel Saga is, but hilarity does ensue. Personally I think Louie takes too much FLAK from the girls early on, especially from Melissa (aka "IT'S AGAINST MY WILL!"). There were times I felt like Louie should have just told them to "go fuck themselves", but of course he's the bone-headed hero.

Genie, for being a buff-chick, is HOT...but then again so are Melissa, Merrill, Ila, Celecia. Hell almost ALL of the female characters are HOT. Though currently, I'm partial to Genie right now...what with Shattered Worlds (aka BOTP6) coming up, and she's just dead on with the character "Red" I'm working on.

Rune Soldier reminds me A LOT of Slayers, which is also silly and serious.

All in all, I wanna see the rest of the series ASAP.

I give Louie the Rune Solder the Outerverse Seal of Approval.

I paid 15 bucks a pop for them, but they should be available in a boxed set now that they are all out.

Which reminds me I really need to put a write up for volumes 5 & 6.

Give your heart a Louie Punch!!
