Blu-Ray & UMD are DEAD... 5 years later: Well we were half right. :P

Recommended Posts

I just read an article talking about how Sony is actively blocking the "adult" industry from being able to make & market porn Blu-Ray Discs and & UMDs.

Most of you don't remember Beta vs VHS...hell I BARELY do. But one MAJOR thing that killed Beta was their prohibition on allowing porn to be put on that format.

History is going to repeat itself. I'm declaring Blu-Ray & UMD dead on arrival.

I don't think I heard about Beta until that one episode of Cowboy Bebop.

But yeah, I'm surprised I didn't notice this element sooner. The whole porn profit bit. Makes a lot of sense.

BYE SONY

GET OUT

P.S. DON'T LET THE DOORKNOB HIT YOU IN THE ASS ON THE WAY OUT

Betamax -> MiniDisc -> UMD -> Blu-Ray

Sony: developing failure after failure for almost 30 years.

Woah, seriously? Porn is like the biggest DVD mover out there. Infact, porn is one of the first places you see any sort of technology adoption. Look at digital movie distribution, for one.

This is a terrible idea. I thought Blu-ray was sure fire just because they have so many mainstream studios behind them but really, hd-dvd just started looking a hell of a lot better.

lol sony knew better after Beta than to do this again.

UMD started dead but time has told and bluray is here to stay, at least until our telecom networks are completely overhauled.

I still don't have a dedicated br player and hd dvd has been dead for fuckkin 3 years.

I do like the implication that at any point ever the UMD might have been more than a gimmick.

We sure were wrong, huh.

Really fucking wrong.

The enitre universe shifted at some point when this thread was made and Blu-Ray became "the thing" to have. It seems to have boiled down to it being Sun's BD-Java vs Microsoft HDi, where everyone deicded to go with Java.

Really it's like in 2008 everyone all at once said "Welp that was fun, now lets cash in with Sony & the PS3."

Given that the PS2 largely drove DVD adoption as a backdoor DVD player, I guess it wasn't that surprising that the PS3 would do the same.

Also that article was a crock of shit there is tons of porn on Bluray.

At the time (2007) there wasn't. I want to say that Pirates was the only HD porn movie at the time and it was only on HD-DVD at the time. It's now on Blu-Ray. Really didn't start seeing more of HD porn until after HD-DVD died.
